If Everyone Spent The Money They Would Normally Give To Their Church, Would That “bail Out” The Economy?

Most churches have a diaconate that help its members in need. I lost my job four months ago an my church helps me with groceries, phone bill, subway cards, etc. Maybe you’d argue it is a waste of their funds.

No, money that is given to church is to pay for the church. Many churches give some of that money to help with the community the are located in. It would be about as effective as having everyone who pays bills give the money they use to pay bills to the economy instead of paying the bills.
In other words, it wouldn’t do anything but worsen the economy and force churches to close because people stopped giving them an income.

that’s a great question. I’ve always despised organized religion, especially when it comes to taking people’s money. I guess churches know better than to post their revenues online… these figures are just estimates, but I think it’s something like 50% of humans are Christian, and 40% actually go to church. so if each person gave a quarter… that’s 6713766305 people (census from the first of august) divided by 2, multiplied by 4/10, multiplied by 25 =33568831525 cents, or 335 million, 688 thousand, 315 dollars, and 25 cents. =(
    …but that’s just one day.
you know what there are a lot of problems with my answer… even if churches posted their average daily revenues there would be totally random-*** factors. possibly if every christian church gave its figures… god 50% of people? wait that cant be right… sauce!…
okay redo with new numbers… christianity holds 2.1 billion church going ignoramuses, multiplied by … what a dollar? thats 2.1 billion dollars a day. naw let’s go… 50cents, thats a generous 1.05 billion dollars for a day of church, worldwide.

No, because the churches do spend the money, for example to pay the salaries of their employees (clergy, maintenance people, Sunday school teachers), to build their buildings and improve them (employing construction workers), and to help less fortunate people (spending money on food, cooking supplies, etc.). The money gets spent and therefore helps to drive the economy either way.

    No.
Plus, Benny Hinn, Paul Crouch, John Hagee, Rod Parsley, Ted Haggard, and Paula White would never allow it.
    Hinn would buy another Benz.
Crouch would get more gaudy furniture for his TV studio.
Hagee would send it to Israel, after visiting a weight loss clinic.
Parsley wouldn’t tell you what he did with his.
Haggard would spend it on meth and male prostitutes.
Paula would get a makeover and would save for her next divorce.
I could name more…like Juanita Bynum, Creflo Dollar (2 Rolls Royces), Pat Robertson, Oral Roberts, the late D. James Kennedy, John Ankerberg, John Avanzini, Kenneth Copeland (new airplane), Jess Duplantis (new airplane), Jess Moody, W.V. Grant, Marilyn Hickey, Kenneth Hagin, T.D. Jakes, Bob Larson, Joyce Meyer, Joel Osteen, Earl Paulk (busted for sexual perversions and crimes), Peter Popoff, James Robison, Jay Sekulow, Jordan Sekulow, James Dobson (a disgrace to my profession…both Psychology and Christianity), and Jack & Rexella Van Impe. I can list more, but you get the picture.
Are you folks forgetting that televangelism is a multi-billion dollar industry? Yup, bogus pastors and “Jesus Junk” (Christian Trinkets, Music, and Books) bring in a huge buck! All this while Jesus still is wearing the same old sandals…and people go hungry.
EDIT: Giving thumbs down is easy…how about refuting my claims on these ‘ministers?” BTW, many of them have either been indicted or are under continuing Federal investigation.
Thumbs Down! That’ll change reality. LMAO

  5. Although I would agree some churches are a bit shady most help the poor and give comfort to ill people and do good with their tithes so if they threw that to another cause it would leave a huge deficit so that just wouldn’t work although I see your point when I see this mega churches.
So you’re at least half right.

How about if everybody got an equal share of the money they gave the banks. I think the figure would be around 400,000 a piece. That would have jump started the economy big time not to mention helped the banks because most would have paid their mortgages or loans off.

  7. Jennifer J says:

No. Churches put money into the economy also, as they still pay utilities, and most of the donations given to churches go towards charity work.

  8. lawrence says:

No, not really because it just isn’t that much to begin with. We need to stop living beyond our means and save like there is no tomorrow, because for many there will not be.

Speaking as a true Conservative, I only enter Church on Christmas and Easter. I don’t think $2 per family is going to make much difference.

  10. Mrs. Tammy Knows Better says:

That would bankrupt the churches (and destroy a lot of charity initiatives). That would make a lot of intolerant Nazis happy.

  11. Sophie says:

It would be a small drop in the bucket and then the churches would be strapped and begging.

  12. fangtaiy says:

Bad choice. That would make your God a god of prosperity adn fertility like the Baals. You lose in the end.
God should be honored first and there are many things more imprtant than doh re mi.

I do agree with other posts -Church’s need to be taxed.
It would serve them right. Especially the Mormon church.
